Abadan Refinery

Abadan refinery is the first refining unit in Iran which started in 1912 to refine the oil of Masjed Soleiman. Its first capacity was 2500 barrels a day, but this refinery was extended during the times until its capacity was 5000 barrels a day in 1951, and after contract with foreign companies and increasing the capacity of refining to 600.000 barrels a day, it became one of the biggest refineries of the world, and Abadan became the center of export of oil products in the east hemisphere. Abadan Refinery with the title of the largest refinery of the world by September 1980 had the capacity of 630.000 barrels per day. This refinery also has an important port for exporting the oil products which is named Mahshahr. Having 8 docks, saving part for oil materials, loading and mixing machineries, sea loading machineries, controlling equipment and laboratory, Mahshahr port is able to have oil tankers with the capacity of 50.000 tones.
During the war Abadan refinery was out of production orbit because of the damage. After war damages were repaired, and in the rebuilding phase, it started with the capacity of 130.000 barrels a day, and now is able to refine about 450.000 barrels of crude oil a day.
Abadan products are: liquid gas, variety of solvents, normal gasoline,Kerosene, jet fuel, gasoil, light fuel oil, motor grease, bitumen, and sulphur.

Abadan Bitumen plant

In order to extent and increase the producing capacity of Abadan refinery, bitumen unit (CBBU) was used in 1968 after designing and building. this unit is located next to and between distillation unit 55(vacuum tower) and unit 75 (atmospheric and vacuum).the feed(VB) for bitumen unit(CBBU) is provided by units 55,60,75, and by the lines FOB2, and FOB3.this unit had been producing more than 40 types of bitumen before war, and like most of the units of refinery there was damage during the war, so the bitumen unit was not active and bitumen was produced by distillation unit. Nowadays because of existing conditions only grade 60/70 bitumen and MC2 are produced. Regarding to company’s strategic program a new unit will be built in future.
